Sorry, I’ve been lax about my blog as I struggle to get my rhythm. The last few days I’ve also been indulging in a self-pity party that things didn’t take off when I landed as fast as I hoped.
Friday night I went to the children’s movie, Bridge to Tarabithia. Oh. My. God. NOT a children’s movie. At least not in the imaginations and magical way I was expecting. I was sobbing through the last 30 minutes of the movie and all the children around me were absolutely SILENT. I cried most of the way home to St. Mary’s whereupon I had to explain to the people in the living room, “My face is red and my eyes are swollen because… I went to see a kid’s movie.”
It’s still a good movie – just don’t go with the expectation of being carried to a magical land with grand adventures, and take Kleenex.

Spoiler Warning!
I managed to catch up on a few Supernatural Episodes. Tall Tales, Born Under a Bad Sign and Nightshifter. Of the three I admit I liked Nightshifter and Tall Tales best.
Nightshifter had much of the drama that made the first season so gripping. I loved the setup with the robberies and the solidity of the characters. Of course, the ending made me itch for the next show; Dean’s line as they drove away definitely set the tone for more intense conflict and the possibility of great things to come.
Tall Tales made me laugh out loud in several places and as I was watching the shows on my laptop at a coffee shop – that’s a good thing. That show pulled on the humor that made first season so charming; adding balance to the drama and a dash of mischievousness which offsets the grief and the tension. The interaction between Sam and Dean is brought to a whole new level in a very realistic familial way. I loved it!
In the first season episode, Hell House, the boys live out pranks and reveal idiosyncrasies that make their relationship tangible. Tall Tales was a reflection of this dynamic in a very adorable way. Especially the part where they relate the story to someone of the night before and as Sam tells his version, Dean is with a skanky drunk who hurls into her own mouth and struggled to keep it down then says “Gotta keep my liquor down!” It’s so disgusting and hysterical at the same time and Dean beams as though with pride that he’s scored such a princess!
Anyway, that brings me to Born Under a Bad Sign. Not my favorite. I’ve mentioned before that the ongoing Sam/Demon plots are getting old. While this episode was a nice little shift to the degree that Sam was possessed by Meg and the added complication that he killed a hunter which will bring the wrath of other hunters down on the brothers (good addition for tension) I’m a little concerned that the shows are getting written closer and closer to a corner. Which could be fun – but usually the corner is the end of the line.
What I’d really like to see is an out. I’d like to see more vanishing points that could be followed up later as plots thicken. I’d like to see more of a wide base of supernatural diversity.
More diversity in paranormal and supernatural phenomena. I think this would add layers to the problem with the Demon, which at the moment feels very linear and flat. I also think is would add more incoming and outgoing characters for the brothers to interact with, which by default would reveal more of facets of their brotherly dynamic.
They’re great characters – I think they need to be showcased more rather than put in regular “Sammy’s in trouble with the dark side again” which can only bring the same aspects of their characters to light, Dean-protector, Sam-victim/fighter.
Growth. The brother need character growth if they’re going to survive.
The next show isn’t scheduled till the 15th of March. Let’s hope it’s a good one.
