Tomorrow I begin the Barracuda Bootcamp training sessions with my trainer, Nick Horton, head coach of the PDX Weightlifting Team. I’m alternately nervous about it and ridiculously excited.

I’ve known Nick for almost three years now, and I’ve seen what he can do. I likely wouldn’t trust anyone with my safety and personal goals the way I trust Nick and his level of expertise.

I’ll be starting a much higher protein diet than I’m used to but the thing that has me the most excited is the interval training that includes lifting weights.

I’m not a cardio person. Seriously, anything that jogs my boobs is a no-go. I won’t do it. But weight lifting always promises easy returns and I feel stronger almost right away.

The diet and the cardio are going to be a whole other story, but for starters at least I can get excited about weights.

Nick and I met at our favorite café a few years ago and started working on a co-op film project in SE Portland together. I’m really looking forward to working with him because I’ve never actually seen him in a bad mood.

And if I’m trusting myself to someone when I’m going to be cranky, and tired and pushing my comfort limits – he’s the one I know can take it.

He’s funny, charming and prone to spontaneous singing –almost perpetually cheerful and endlessly encouraging.

I’m never fully embarked on a program like this before – and I probably never would have considered it if it weren’t for the fact that he’s the Barracuda Bootcamp trainer, and I trust him enough that I know he personally doesn’t want anything for me that I don’t want for myself and that he loves me enough to help me be my best and reach my goals.

Which is to trim 30lbs of fat and put on 10-12 lbs of muscle, if not a little more.

I’m trying to erase those ideas in my mind of guys telling me it’s unattractive and unfeminine to be muscular.

I actually enjoy being muscular – so I’m going to go for it whether dudes think it’s sexy or not.

So today is day one and I started increasing my protein and tomorrow I meet with him for a 16 week overhaul.

Wish me luck! The first three weeks are gonna be brutal, and I can pretty much guarantee that as I’m sweating my ass off, Nick will be not the least bit winded next to me singing ‘Dancing Queen’. And that’s what I’m looking forward to the most.
