As previously mentioned here about considering the self-publishing path, I’ve been doing quite a lot of research about the options and what this venture would actually entail.
One reason I’ve never put much thought into self-publishing was because logically, I know it will be a tremendous amount of work that would likely cut into time for writing.
It seems like one of those things you think you’ll be super prepared for but the reality of just how much it affects your life is potentially much more impact than you were initially expecting.
So I’ve been reading tons of blogs by people who are self-published, trying to discover what sorts of adjustments they’ve made with their writing and living schedules to accommodate running a full-fledged business including your own marketing and promotions.
For authors considering this route, it makes sense to want to know what you’re getting into.
But the truth is, so far in my research there are very few successful self-published authors like myself who don’t have a backlist of titles or who are not producing several books a year. So with my situation of putting out maybe one very thick fantasy volume a year, without built-in fans and no previous titles to use as a platform – it seems much more risky for a small-timer like me than for a writers like Konrath or Hocking or Eisler.
There are strategies to help with this and nothing is set in stone. I have till January to make up my mind which route to take. More research is needed.
Have any of you thought about the self-publishing path? Anyone pondering similar situations?
